Trombonist Patrick Crossland was born in Jackson, Mississippi. Growing up in southern Louisiana, he began playing trombone at age 10. His musical study continued at the University of Southern Mississippi (BM, magna cum laude), the Manhattan School of Music (MM), the Royal College of Music (Postgraduate Diploma, with distinction), the University of Minnesota (DMA), and the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik – Trossingen (Solistische Ausbildung). His trombone instructors include Dr. Robert Schmalz, Dr. Marta Hofacre, Dr. Per Brevig, Peter Bassano, Lindsey Shilling, Thomas Ashworth, Mike Svoboda, and Abbie Conant.
Patrick Crossland has worked with several prominent conductors including Pierre Boulez, Daniele Gatti, and Lorin Maazel, and has appeared with orchestras and ensembles including the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the New York City Opera, the Südwestdeutsche Philharmonie Konstanz, MusikFabrik, SurPlus, L'Art Pour L'Art, Linea, and the Kammerensemble Neue Musik Berlin. A staunch advocate of new music and performer/composer collaboration, he has been privileged to work with a number of composers including Vinko Globokar and Marco Stroppa.
Noteworthy solo performances include appearances at the Walker Art Center’s “Festival Dancing In Your Head” (2001, 2002, 2005), the American Trombone Workshop (2003, 2013), the Internationale Ferienkurse für Neue Musik, Darmstadt (2004, 2006, 2008), the “Utopia Jetzt!” Festival (Germany) where he performed his acclaimed “V for Grock” multimedia recital, and UMBC's Livewire Festival in Baltimore.
Patrick Crossland is the recipient of a stipendium from the Landesgraduiertenförderungsgesetz of Baden-Württemberg (2004-2005), a Solo Performance Prize winner at the Internationale Ferienkurse für Neue Musik, Darmstadt (2004), a prize winner at the Sparda Classic Trombone Competition (2008) and was awarded a Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artist Award (2014).
In addition to his activities as a soloist and chamber musician, Patrick is an avid improvisor, working with a wide range of musicians and dancers including Günter Christmann, Alexander Frangenheim, Jack Wright, and Heidelberg's Unterwegs Theater. He was a featured artist in the 2013 High Zero Festival in Baltimore, MD and in the concepts of doing festival in Berlin (2013, 2015). He is currently a member of the Composers Slide Quartet and Ensemble Laboratorium. Now living in Columbia, Maryland, he teaches trombone and other music courses at the University of Maryland Baltimore County.
